The Illinois Association of REALTORS® backed landlords in Belvidere who oppose a proposalwhich would force registration for rental property, as reported in the Rockford Register Star .
The Belvidere City Council is considering the plan which would add a mandatory pre-rental inspection and a $25 fee.
“We see it as a very big cost burden and regulatory burden on the landlord,” said Conor Brown, a government affairs director for IAR who works closely with the Belvidere Board of REALTORS®. “People have to come up with the money. So it’s either coming out of the landlord’s pocket or the tenant’s pocket.”
No action was taken on Monday. The article said some aldermen suggested eliminating the fee associated with the inspections.
