Illinois REALTORS help construct homes along the Gulf Coast over Katrina anniversary week. A team of 16 Illinois REALTORS and IAR staff spent Aug. 25 -Sept. 1 in Mobile County, Alabama, assisting completion of 11 different homes in a Habitat for Humanity subdivision for families displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The volunteer group from Illinois is one of as many as 30 REALTOR teams taking part in the REALTOR-Habitat Partnership for Gulf Coast Recovery program, in which the National Association of REALTORS and state and local REALTOR associations have committed to generate more than $4 million to build as many as 54 houses along the Gulf Coast. |

The team of Illinois REALTORS worked side-by-side with the future homeowners and local Habitat crews to construct roofs, paint, install windows and doors. Last year the Illinois Association of REALTORS donated $70,000 to build a home for the REALTOR-Habitat Partnership for Gulf Coast Recovery and individual REALTORS and local REALTOR associations around the state contributed an additional $74,415 to fund the second home. Then in October of 2006 Illinois REALTOR volunteers built frames for two Habitat homes onsite at the IAR headquarters in Springfield. The frames were then shipped to the storm-affected area for final construction by the team and others throughout 2007. |
