IAR will hold the first in a series of meetings with members of Illinois’ Congressional delegation Aug. 7 with Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) in Woodridge. IAR Advocacy Victory on Fire Sprinkler Mandate

Facing stiff opposition from policymakers and state residents, Illinois State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis on Friday withdrew a proposal with a state legislative panel for a statewide fire sprinkler mandate. The mandate was the subject of intense IAR member focus. Thousands of members answered a call for action and lobbied lawmakers, many of whom adamantly opposed the changes. Read more

President Obama To Address Consumer Housing Questions

On Wednesday at noon, the President will answer questions submitted by homeowners, renters, and prospective buyers during a live online event moderated by Zillow. Questions can be submitted via social media using the hashtag #AskObamaHousing.

Section 8 Voucher Holder Now a Protected Class Under Cook County’s Fair Housing Law

Starting on August 8th, it will be a violation of the Cook County Human Rights Ordinance to discriminate in real estate transactions based upon an individual participating in a housing choice voucher program (Section 8). For more information, read IAR’s Q&A on this issue and save the date for the IAR Legal Webinar on Aug. 22 which will follow up on the Cook County Section 8 ordinance, plus disclosures required in connection with the real estate transaction and the broker's role in each (e.g., lead paint, radon, seller disclosure, disclosure of latent material defects and disclosure of stigmas related to the property.)

Trend: Middle-aged Women Fast Growing Group of Buyers

Women, ages 45-54, are the fastest growing group of single female homeowners, according to a recent Redfin study. Homeownership for this group has grown 120 percent since 1982.
